In a recent political clash, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has criticized the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) following its proposal to revisit the inclusion of ‘socialist’ and ‘secular’ terms in India’s Constitution. Yadav accused the RSS of indirectly opposing the principles of secularism and social justice, as some are hesitant to speak against reservations directly due to electoral implications.
The controversy follows remarks by RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale during an event marking the 50th anniversary of India’s emergency period. Hosabale argued that terms like ‘socialist’ and ‘secular’ were inserted during the emergency to suppress civil liberties and control power, advocating for a re-evaluation.
Simultaneously, Yadav took a swipe at the BJP’s ‘double-engine government’ slogan, highlighting a reported closure of 35,000 MSME units under their governance. Uttar Pradesh’s MSME minister, Rakesh Sachan, refuted Yadav’s claims, citing over 96 lakh MSME units thriving due to government policies and contributing to significant employment across the state.
