The BBC has unveiled a teaser trailer for the upcoming second series of sitcom Daddy Issues.
Featuring The White Lotus’ Aimee Lou Wood and David Morrissey, the BBC comedy caused quite a stir when it launched last year, achieving a perfect 100% score on review website Rotten Tomatoes.
Based in Stockport, it followed pregnant party animal Gemma (Aimee), who finds herself flat-sharing with her recently separated father Malcolm (David).
The show is now making a comeback for a second series, with a short trailer revealing Gemma navigating being a mum to baby Sadie with her dad’s Malcolm’s support, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The brief teaser shows Gemma feeding her infant in a high chair as she declares: “There is this fire inside me now – I want to provide a better life for my baby.”
Gemma then appears in numerous predicaments, before doting grandfather Malcolm is shown cradling her child. “I can’t do this without you dad,” Gemma admits.
The upcoming series will show Gemma adapting to parenthood, before an unexpected guest compels her to confront her destiny – and Malcolm to address his history.
Meanwhile, Gemma’s closest mate Cherry (Taj Atwal) is on hand for support and guidance, alongside her sibling Catherine (Sharon Rooney) and her boss Rita (Sarah Hadland).
Daddy Issues proved popular with audiences upon its release last year and garnered numerous rave reviews at the time.
The Independent noted that “thanks to its winning central duo, Daddy Issues feels like a warm hug of a show, but with just enough edge to keep you on your toes”. A critic from The Times praised: “Daddy Issues is the funniest sitcom I’ve seen in ages. It really is a sitcom, too. Not a comedy drama. Comedy in a situation. Sitcom. You remember.”
The Evening Standard described the series as “a sharp, sweet and incessantly witty take on parenthood, female friendships and mid-life crises”.
Fans were thrilled to learn of its imminent return, with one eager viewer posting online after the trailer was released: “WHEN?????????????????????” Another added: “I have waited so long.”
