There are new ticket policies coming to Metro-North riders in January.
The MTA, which operates the railroad, said the policy changes simplify ticketing rules and speed up the fare-collection process. The agency said they are subject to ongoing review.
While the MTA has noted monthly and weekly tickets will increase across Metro-North, CTDOT confirmed the fare increases only affect the New York portion of the New Haven Line.
New Haven line riders will see fares increase by 5%, but not until July 1, 2026. The first 5% increase went into effect on September 1, 2025.
Here’s a summary of ticket policies that will apply to Metro-North New Haven Line passengers, according to a press release from the MTA:
Unlimited day pass replaces the Round-Trip Ticket
New “pay as you go” discount
The MTA said the fare changes were approved in September 2025, and the MTA has made the public aware via station signage, social media, the MTA website, and press releases to the media.
Jim Cameron founded the Commuter Action Group and writes a column in the CT Mirror. He said he believes the changes stem from the MTA’s attempt to limit fares that go uncollected.
“They’re forcing us to be in compliance with what makes things easiest for them, not necessarily for us as riders,” Cameron said.
The columnist said he had concerns about commuters facing penalties for “legitimate” excuses like poor cell signal, a rush to make the train, and technical issues.
“I just don’t think that’s fair. It’s not going to encourage people to take the train, which is what we’re supposed to be doing,” Cameron said. “This is hardly a way of making commuting easier. I think it’s going to make it more difficult.”
Cameron said he’d like to see more publicity on the changes from the MTA ahead of when the rules take effect on January 4.
“This is a rule they, I think, intend to enforce,” he said. “To make this so adversarial, I think, is sending the wrong messages to commuters.”
