FRAKENMUTH, MI – A Michigan resident allegedly shot himself accidentally inside a Kroger store on Saturday, Oct. 18, according to Frankenmuth Police.
At approximately 2:13 p.m., Saginaw County 911 dispatched officers to a report of a shooting that had just occurred at 435 N Main St., the local Kroger store.
Upon arrival, officers immediately rendered first aid, including applying a tourniquet to the patient’s leg to control the bleeding.
Police said the injured subject, a 53-year-old resident of Vassar and a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) holder, was with his wife at the time of the incident.
The subject stated he was reaching into his pocket when the weapon unexpectedly discharged.
According to the news release, witness interviews and video surveillance review conducted at the scene both support the conclusion that this was an accidental discharge.
The firearm involved was a .380 caliber handgun. Mobile Medical Response and the Frankenmuth Fire Department arrived on the scene and transported the patient to Covenant Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The Frankenmuth Police Department took the firearm for safekeeping. No other injuries were reported, and no property damage was observed. The bullet was not recovered at the scene.
Police have determined that there is no ongoing threat to the community regarding this incident. The matter remains under investigation.
