The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), along with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) and VERSA Advanced Maritime Services (VERSA), has established a partnership which aims to improve coastal transportation systems throughout the Emirate. The partnership will establish Seaglider operations in Abu Dhabi by 2028, which will transform the area’s transportation system while promoting environmentally friendly mobility solutions.

The Seagliders are fully electric, high-speed, zero-emission vessels that use the Wing-in-Ground (WIG) effect, allowing them to glide just above the sea surface. This innovative design significantly reduces travel times, offering a greener and more efficient means of transportation along Abu Dhabi’s coastal routes. As the first operator of Seagliders in the UAE, VERSA aims to launch these vessels as part of its broader vision for transforming coastal mobility.

The partnership is particularly aimed at shortening travel distances between Abu Dhabi City and the Al Dhafra Region, with plans to expand this service across the emirate and the broader UAE. By utilising Seagliders, Abu Dhabi seeks to enhance connectivity between its cities, thereby making travel faster and more sustainable for both residents and visitors.

This collaboration not only targets improved mobility but also underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to sustainable growth. The partnership’s focus on environmentally friendly technology aligns with the UAE’s national innovation goals and supports green tourism initiatives. With its eco-friendly Seagliders, the project is poised to have a significant impact on the local tourism sector, providing visitors with a unique mode of transport that blends cutting-edge technology with eco-conscious travel options.

Moreover, this initiative forms a key part of Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Strategy 2030, which places a strong emphasis on innovative infrastructure and sustainable tourism development. This new form of transportation will not only make it easier to travel between key destinations but will also reduce the environmental footprint of traditional forms of coastal transport.

The agreement also includes feasibility studies and market analysis to examine the operational, commercial, and environmental impacts of introducing Seagliders to the UAE’s coastal regions. The parties involved will assess operational models, including routes, schedules, and the development of the required infrastructure. This detailed planning phase will ensure that the Seagliders are deployed efficiently and effectively, ultimately enhancing tourism offerings in the region.

The partnership marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing development of Abu Dhabi as a global leader in smart mobility. The Seagliders are expected to play a significant role in this transformation, complementing the emirate’s existing transport networks and tourism infrastructure.

The introduction of Seaglider services aligns perfectly with the UAE’s ongoing efforts to bolster its tourism appeal and increase tourist satisfaction by offering more innovative, sustainable travel options. As Abu Dhabi continues to evolve, this project demonstrates how the emirate is embracing new technologies to create seamless travel experiences for its visitors.

With Seagliders, tourists will be able to enjoy faster, greener, and more comfortable travel along the UAE’s stunning coastline. Additionally, the environmentally friendly aspect of the Seagliders ensures that the project aligns with global sustainability goals, making it an attractive option for eco-conscious travellers.

The Seaglider project marks the start of a new era of coastal mobility in Abu Dhabi, bringing innovative transportation solutions to the heart of the UAE’s tourism sector. By 2028, the region will have a state-of-the-art, zero-emission transport system that not only enhances connectivity but also supports Abu Dhabi’s sustainability goals.

The Seagliders will create new experiences for tourists who visit the emirate. The new sustainable travel solutions, which operate with greater efficiency, will provide visitors to Abu Dhabi an enhanced travel experience that supports the city as a top international destination for sustainable tourism innovation.
