Abia PDP Accuses State Government of Attempting to Silence Opposition – InfoStride News

The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the state government of plotting to suppress opposition voices, following allegations raised against former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu over a recent political meeting held at his residence in Obingwa Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Eric Ikwuagwu, the PDP described the government’s claim that the meeting amounted to “unlawful political campaigning” as baseless and an attempt to stifle dissent.

According to the party, no law in Nigeria prohibits any citizen, including former governors, from holding private meetings or expressing political opinions.

“Dr. Ikpeazu has every right — constitutionally and morally — to assemble with his supporters and discuss political matters, especially within the confines of his own residence,” the statement read.

“What Governor Otti’s administration has maliciously labeled as ‘unlawful political campaigning’ is simply a normal opposition political engagement, where ideas are exchanged and government policies are critically assessed — an essential element of any functional democracy.”

The PDP further accused the state government of applying double standards by turning a blind eye to civic receptions, thanksgiving services, and town hall meetings attended by Governor Alex Otti himself while attacking opposition gatherings.

The party also dismissed claims that Ikpeazu’s comments were inciting, insisting that the former governor had not made any inflammatory statements capable of breaching public peace.

“We will not be intimidated or bullied into silence. Democracy thrives on healthy opposition, and no government should attempt to muzzle the voice of dissent,” the party stated.

Drawing a parallel, the PDP likened Ikpeazu’s alleged ordeal to the treatment faced by former President Goodluck Jonathan from his successor after leaving office, claiming that political persecution of past leaders is becoming a disturbing trend.
