Following President Donald Trump’s lead from two weeks ago, the conservative Club for Growth PAC is getting behind Attorney General James Uthmeier’s bid to keep his appointed job in next year’s election.
The D.C.-based group’s President, David McIntosh, said Uthmeier has done “a tremendous job” since Gov. Ron DeSantis picked him to serve as Florida’s top cop this year, adding that he’s “the only candidate in the race that will put Florida first.”
“James Uthmeier is a proven leader with a lengthy track record of protecting the rule of law and championing limited government policies,” McIntosh said in a statement.
“Club for Growth PAC is proud to join President Trump in endorsing Uthmeier for a full term, and we look forward to ensuring he continues to serve as Florida’s Attorney General.”
Club for Growth PAC previously backed DeSantis for Congress and for re-election as Governor in 2021. In March, it was an early endorser of U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds’ gubernatorial campaign.
The nod Tuesday from the organization — an affiliate of Club for Growth Action, self-described as “the nation’s largest conservative super PAC” — joins others from Trump, the Republican Attorneys General Association and 51 current and former Sheriffs.
Uthmeier filed paperwork to run for Attorney General in late February, less than two weeks after he was sworn in.
A former counsel to Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and senior adviser to former U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Uthmeier faces one Primary foe in Punta Gorda litigator Steven Leskovich, who worked as an Assistant Public Defender before going into private practice in 2002.
Other Republicans who were or are rumored to be mulling potential runs include House Speaker Daniel Perez, former House Speaker Chris Sprowls and former U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz.
José Javier Rodríguez, a former state Senator and Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor under former President Joe Biden, launched his Attorney General campaign in June and is still running for the job unopposed on the Democratic side.
