It happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. in the San Jacinto Mountains about six miles southwest of Idyllwild. The first earthquake had a magnitude of 3.8, followed one minute later by a 3.5-magnitude earthquake, according to the US Geological Survey.
The quakes were about four miles from Valley Vista, eight miles from Hemet, nine miles from San Jacinto, and 13 miles from Beaumont. Residents reported feeling mild to moderate tremors from earthquakes as far east as Cathedral City and Indio and as far west as Murrieta.
A Riverside County Police Department spokesman said there were no reports of damage due to the small earthquakes.
The Southern California quakes came on the heels of a pair of quakes near San Juan Bautista on the Central Coast. The first was a 3.9 magnitude earthquake at 12:48 p.m., followed by a 4.0 magnitude earthquake at 12:57 p.m.
In the past 10 days, there have been no earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered near the site of the Riverside County earthquakes.
An average of 234 magnitude 3.0 and 4.0 earthquakes occur each year in California and Nevada, according to a recent three-year data sample.
