‘A Minecraft Movie’ is officially getting a sequel: Here’s what we know so far (including the release date)

Riding this success, Warner Bros. officially announced a sequel on Oct. 9.

Warner Bros. is scoring big at the 2025 box office with Sinners, Weapons, Superman, and A Minecraft Movie. The latter stands out as the studio’s top earner of the year (and third highest overall), pulling in $957 million worldwide on a $150 million budget. It’s also the second highest-grossing video game adaptation ever, just behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), this adventure comedy follows a group of oddballs who are unexpectedly transported through a portal into the vibrant, cubic Overworld, a realm bursting with creativity. With the help of expert crafter Steve (Jack Black), the group must find their way home and thwart the evil piglin sorceress Malgosha (Rachel House).

Though reviews were mixed, A Minecraft Movie quickly became a cultural sensation, sparking viral social media trends (looking at you, chicken jockey) and meme-worthy lines like “Flint and steel,” “I… am Steve,” and “This is a crafting table.”

To no one’s surprise, a sequel is on the way. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming A Minecraft Movie sequel, from its release date to the cast.

Yes, the Minecraft Movie universe is officially expanding.

On Oct. 9, Warner Bros. announced that an untitled sequel is in the works. While plot details “remain deep in the mine for now,” the studio confirmed that Hess will return to direct. This time, he’ll pen the script with Chris Galletta, a writer on the first film.

The official Minecraft Movie social media accounts celebrated the news by sharing the first teaser poster for the sequel. “Building terrain,” reads the caption.

Malgosha absolutely despises creativity and seeks to wipe out the Overworld. To do so, she needs the Orb of Dominance, a relic that, alongside the Earth Crystal, opened the portal that brought our human heroes into the blocky world.

Near the end of A Minecraft Movie, Malgosha gets hold of the Orb and unleashes an horde of hogs on the Overworld. The heroes fight back with an army of Iron Golems and a fireball-spewing Ghast, eventually defeating Malgosha. The portal to the Nether is then sealed, saving the Overworld from her antics.

With the Orb reclaimed, the group returns to the real world. Steve hesitates, torn between the life he’s built in the Overworld and his new friends back home, but ultimately chooses to return to the fictional town of Chuglass, Idaho. There, he works at a video game store owned by Garrett (Jason Momoa). The two even perform an original song, “I Feel Alive.”

As for the others, Natalie (Emma Myers) now teaches martial arts, Dawn (Danielle Brooks) finally opens a petting zoo, and Henry (Sebastian Hansen) impresses the school by perfecting his once-faulty jetpack.

There are also two post-credits scenes that tease the future of the franchise. In the first, fans learn that Marlene (Jennifer Coolidge) and Nitwit (Matt Berry) are in love and even learned each other’s languages. They are also getting married, much to the horror of Marlene’s ex-husband Mr. Gunchie (Hiram Garcia).

In the second, Steve returns to his old house, only to find it now occupied by a woman named Alex. Fans will immediately recognize her as the other default player avatar in the Minecraft games.

A Minecraft Movie sequel is currently set to hit theaters (including IMAX screens) on July 23, 2027.

As of this writing, the cast for the Minecraft Movie sequel has yet to be revealed, but it’s safe to say fans can expect Black and Momoa to reprise their roles as Steve and Garrett, respectively.

Danielle Brooks and Emma Myers both shared the sequel poster to their Instagram Stories on Oct. 9, suggesting that they’ll also be back as Dawn and Natalie. Other familiar faces likely to return include Sebastian Hansen as Henry, Natalie’s younger brother, and, fingers crossed, Jennifer Coolidge as Marlene.

The first film’s post-credits scene teased the arrival of Alex, who was voiced by Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon.

If McKinnon doesn’t return for the sequel, Kirsten Dunst is willing to step in. In an August 2025 interview with Town & Country, the Oscar-nominated actress expressed interest in joining the Minecraft Movie sequel. “Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?” she joked.

A Minecraft Movie is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
