Step back in time around 50 years with these fascinating photos of Liverpool city centre in the 1970s. For many, it’s hard to believe that the 70s were around half a century ago.
For context – it was the decade bell bottom pants and ponchos were all the rage, local bands like The Real Thing flew to the top of the charts and we headed to our nearby cinemas to see films like Grease and Saturday Night Fever. In Liverpool itself, Church Street was pedestrianised, the Holiday Inn Hotel opened on Paradise Street and Cousins Confectioners was a familiar fixture across the region,
From how we dressed to the places we shopped and how we socialised, so much has changed in our city since. But these photos offer a glimpse into life in the city centre during that decade.
Courtesy of our archive, Mirrorpix, these photos were taken between 1970 and 1979 and show life on a number of main city centre streets – from buildings and businesses to the people passing through them at the time.
For generations, they are bound to stir memories – and for others, they are a these photos. See more in our gallery below.
