Step back in time around 70 years with these fascinating photos of Liverpool city centre in the 1950s. We’re now well into the year 2025 and for many, it’s hard to believe that the 50s were so long ago.
For context – it was the decade that saw Elizabeth II become Queen, record numbers of babies born in what would be known as the 50s baby boom and Disney’s Cinderella first premiered. From how we dressed to the places we shopped and how we socialised, so much has changed in our city through the decades.
But these photos offer a glimpse into life in the city centre during that decade – and they are definitely a trip back in time. Courtesy of our archive, Mirrorpix, these photos were taken between 1950 and 1959 and show life on a number of main city centre streets – from buildings and businesses to the people and more.
We recently took a look back at life in the city centre back in the 1960s, in the 70s, as well as in the 80s, and the 1990s. But now, we wanted to share brilliant photos from the archive of the following decade in the 50s.
For generations, they are bound to stir memories – and for others, they are a window in our city’s past. See more in our gallery below.
