Hundreds of locals came through the doors within the first hours of operation to explore the 9,200-square-metre Centre, with the first gym members arriving as early as 5:30am.
Located at 6 Gauthorpe Street, Rhodes, the Centre features a top-of-the-line gym and crèche, indoor sports courts, a gymnastics centre, a community lounge and café, an early learning centre, health providers, and more.
“We are thrilled to have opened the doors to Rhodes Recreation Centre – a major investment in the future of our community,” said City of Canada Bay Mayor Michael Megna.
“As one of Sydney’s fastest-growing precincts, we’re committed to providing vibrant public spaces and recreation facilities that support the needs of our growing community.”
With the suburb set to welcome more than 18,000 residents by 2036, the Centre reflects the City of Canada Bay’s commitment to creating high-quality recreation spaces for the local community.

“Rhodes Recreation Centre is for everyone – we want to see families using the Community Lounge as an extension of their living room, and friends catching up for throw-around at our courts.”

Among the first through the doors were Rhodes residents Glenn and Karen Hellyer, the Centre’s first gym members.
“It’s been great watching the Centre come together over the past year – there’s been a real buzz around the place,” Glenn said.
“As soon as memberships opened, we didn’t hesitate to sign up. We had a pre-opening tour and were really impressed – the gym’s fantastic, and the spaces are just beautiful. I think locals are going to be blown away when they see it for themselves.”
“I encourage the community to come and check out the Centre in the coming weeks, sign up for a gym membership, enjoy a coffee in the community lounge, or book a court for some pickleball!” Mayor Megna said.
The Centre’s first day of operation comes ahead of the Rhodes Recreation Centre Opening Celebration on Saturday, 15 November, where Mayor Megna will officially declare the Centre open.
The celebration will feature live performances, cultural activities, stalls from local and elite sporting clubs, giveaways, facility tours, and more.
“We can’t wait to welcome everyone along on November 15 to celebrate this milestone moment for Rhodes,” Mayor Megna said.
