It’s a big week for new movies on Netflix and other popular streaming platforms. We have horror, action, comedy and period dramas ranging from tense political feuds to screwball comedies.

Guillermo del Toro’s latest film is a smash hit on Netflix. While Frankenstein came out this past weekend, it’s still new and fresh enough to drop into this week’s list. The film stars Oscar Isaac as Dr. Victor Frankenstein and boasts a pretty impressive supporting cast including Mia Goth, Ralph Ineson, Charles Dance, Christoph Waltz and Jacob Elordi who plays “The Creature.” With an 86% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and an even higher 95% “Popcornmeter” (or verified audience) score, this is one you definitely don’t want to miss. The film is an adaptation of the classic gothic horror novel by Mary Shelley and is split into two halves: Victor’s Tale and The Creature’s Tale.
If you’re a fan of Eddie Murphy, Being Eddie is for you. The documentary looks back on the life and career of the comedian and actor and explores the massive influence he’s had on cinema and comedy. It includes interviews with Murphy himself, as well as a parade of celebrities and filmmakers he’s worked with over the years.
Playdate is the Paul Blart: Mall Cop / Reacher crossover we’ve all been waiting for – though, to be honest, while Alan Ritchson is built like Reacher here, he’s channeling his first big role: the ridiculously over-the-top Thad Castle from Blue Mountain State. Ritchson teams up Kevin James in this screwball action-comedy. Top that off with what appears to be a villainous turn from Resident Alien star, Alan Tudyk, and you have what appears to be a very funny little movie. I laughed several times during the trailer, and frankly it’s nice to see Ritchson getting back to his comic roots after several seasons of the rather dour Jack Reacher.
Eddington didn’t wow critics when it hit theaters, and audiences were fairly divided, but I’ve been eagerly waiting for this to come to streaming and now it finally does this Friday when it lands on HBO Max. The A24 neo-Western follows small-town sheriff, Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix), who also happens to be running for mayor and incumbent mayor, Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) as they face off in an increasingly tense feud. The story is set in 2020 during the pandemic lockdown, which has the residents of Eddington, New Mexico divided along political lines. Emma Stone, Austin Butler and Luke Grimes also star. Ari Aster (Midsommar) wrote and directed the film.
