As students fill classrooms again with the start of the 2025-2026 academic year, peer bullying, one of the most serious problems of recent years, has once again taken its place on the agenda.
Tuğba Ayşe Aksoy, Family Counselor at the Metropolitan Municipality Social Development Center (SGM), highlighted five important signs that families can use to understand if their children are being bullied.
Aksoy, commenting on the issue, said, “There are five signs that indicate our child is being bullied. The first of these is physical symptoms. Physical symptoms may include wounds, bruises, unexplained bruises on various parts of your child’s body, headaches, stomach aches, and suddenly missing or damaged items. Another is emotional symptoms. If your child experiences anxiety, fear, outbursts of anger, or withdrawal, these could be signs of bullying.”
Aksoy said, “Refusing to go to school and withdrawing from friends are behavioral symptoms. A lack of interest in lessons and a decline in academic performance can be seen as academic symptoms. Finally, statements like ‘Nobody plays with me’ or ‘They don’t like me’ can have different causes when experienced one-time, but if they occur regularly and in multiple situations, it’s a verbal symptom if your child is being bullied.”
Aksoy emphasized the importance of early detection of bullying, saying, “Bullying can cause deep wounds in children’s emotional and academic development. Unfortunately, children don’t always talk about their experiences, so we parents must learn to read the signs correctly. Early detection of bullying is crucial. Support your child and make them feel you’re there for them. If the situation persists, be sure to seek professional help from a professional.”
