July 22, 1925: To take care of expanding business the Hayes-Custer Company, operating the plant at the junction of Empire Street with the Illinois Central railroad, has just completed a new two-story addition to the east. This new building, constructed from concrete blocks, is made necessary by a shortage of space for storage and will be used as a warehouse. The company, which has a workforce of 60, has specialized in manufacturing furnaces but now is adding a new line of gas stoves.

July 22, 1950: The Bloomington City Council has rendered an edict to suburbanites to come into the city or be banned from using Bloomington water. After Jan. 1, 1951, the ordinance reads, no water shall be supplied from systems outside the city where users have been adjacent to the city for six months or more — in other words, Bloomington water is only for Bloomington citizens and taxpayers. The ordinance exempts industries and the town of Normal.

July 22, 1975: Restoration of Normal’s historic brick water tower in Fell Park has been postponed due to lack of interest and money. The Normal City Council was plenty interested until the meeting last week when it found that only one proposal of $9,000 had been submitted.
25 years ago
July 22, 2000: Illinois State University will purchase the former Lexington Cooperative Research Farm from Growmark Inc. for $687,000, taking possession of the 150-acre farm along Interstate 55 north of the Twin Cities next spring. The purchase was approved Friday (July 21) by the ISU Board of Trustees. Specifically, the 150 acres will be purchased for $3,200 per acre for a cost of $480,500. Existing farm buildings are being bought for $206,500.
The agreement includes spending $1.4 million to relocate as well as modify and improve existing facilities on the Lexington farm.
