2027 Elections: Tinubu’s APC Gains Momentum as Opposition Parties Face Internal Crisis

As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, the ruling APC under President Tinubu is strengthening its hold across key states, while opposition parties struggle with internal divisions, defections, and challenges in forming a unified front. The ADC, a coalition party, is battling internal disputes, particularly over the presidential ticket, and the ongoing crisis within the PDP and Labour Party is leading to further defections. The political landscape of Kano State, a key battleground with a large electorate, and the internal strife within the ADC will likely determine the course of the 2027 elections.

The political landscape of Nigeria is rapidly evolving as the nation gears up for the 2027 general election, with the ruling All Progressives Congress ( APC ) under President Bola Tinubu solidifying its position across key states. This strengthening of the APC comes at a time when the opposition parties are grappling with internal challenges, including divisions, defections, and struggles to coalesce behind a unified strategy.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), formed as a potential coalition for opposition leaders, is facing significant internal hurdles, particularly concerning the selection of a presidential candidate, which is further exacerbating the existing vulnerabilities. The ongoing difficulties within prominent opposition parties, such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party, are contributing to a trend of key figures defecting to the ruling APC, shifting the balance of power in the country. This shift has been particularly noticeable since late 2025, with several state governors, alongside lawmakers and local government chairmen, moving to the APC, thereby depleting the ranks of the opposition. When President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, the APC controlled approximately 21 states, whereas the opposition held 15. However, the situation has dramatically changed, with the APC now governing 29 states, leaving the opposition with control of only seven states. The PDP currently manages five states, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Labour Party (LP), and Accord Party (AP) each govern one state, further highlighting the diminished presence of the opposition in the national political arena. The political dynamics in Kano State, often referred to as Nigeria’s ‘political nerve centre,’ are of particular significance in this evolving narrative. With a substantial electorate of nearly six million registered voters, Kano’s electoral outcomes have a considerable impact on the national results. The state has been the scene of intense political competition between the ruling and opposition parties. A notable shift occurred recently when Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf left the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) to join the APC. In the 2023 elections, the NNPP, with Rabiu Kwankwaso as its candidate, secured a resounding victory with 997,279 votes, significantly outpacing the APC’s 517,341 votes. The defection of Governor Yusuf has sparked varied reactions, with some political analysts suggesting that it could bolster President Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 election, while others believe that Kwankwaso’s devoted supporters will keep the APC out of the state. There is also speculation that Kwankwaso might align with the coalition of opposition leaders, potentially creating further electoral complexities. The recent political maneuvers in Kano highlight the strategic importance of the state and its potential influence on the 2027 election.Simultaneously, the opposition’s unity is threatened by internal disagreements within the ADC, the party adopted by a coalition of opposition figures. This division threatens to weaken the opposition’s chances in the upcoming election. The core of this challenge involves disagreements among key figures like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, over the party’s presidential ticket. Supporters of the respective aspirants are intensifying their campaigns, with some, particularly Obi’s supporters, pushing for the ticket to be allocated to the South. A faction within the party, led by Nafiu Gombe, is also a destabilizing factor. Enejo Micheal, a prominent figure in the party from Benue State, has asserted that President Tinubu is responsible for the crisis within the opposition parties, alleging that the administration is deliberately weakening the opposition to encourage defections. He also claims that the ruling party is creating divisions within the ADC to undermine its chances. Despite these challenges, Micheal remains optimistic, emphasizing the ability of experienced politicians within the ADC to manage the situation and advocating for the adoption of direct primary elections to ensure a fair selection process. He believes that Peter Obi would emerge victorious if direct primaries were implemented. This ongoing struggle for internal cohesion, the shifting political alliances, and the strategic importance of key states will likely determine the course of the 2027 general election and its outcome
