Following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to lower the 2026 Hajj fare, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) announced the revised fare today. This announcement was made on September 26.
The directive from Tinubu was conveyed through Vice President Kashim Shettima during a meeting with the NAHCON management team on Monday, October 6.
Shettima emphasised that the decision to reduce the Hajj fare was necessary due to the continued appreciation of the naira against the dollar, which is the primary factor determining pilgrimage costs.
NAHCON stated that the new fare for the 2026 Hajj, which has been set after consultations with relevant stakeholders, represents a reduction of N200,000 compared to the fare paid for the 2025 Hajj across all zones.
NAHCON Chairman/CEO, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, while announcing the fare, said intending pilgrims from Maiduguri/Yola zone, comprising Adamawa, Borno, Taraba and Yobe states, would pay the sum of N8,118,333.67.
The sum of N8,327,125.59 was paid by those from the zone, said to be closer to Saudi Arabia than any other zone in Nigeria, who participated in the 2025 exercise.
Intending pilgrims from other Northern states were to pay N8,244,813.67 as against the N8,457,685.59 paid this year.
Those from Southern states were to pay the sum of N8,561,013.67. Muslim faithful from the zone paid the sum of N8,784,085.59 for the 2025 Hajj.
In compliance with the presidential directive, Usman announced the revised fare in an interview with BBC Hausa Service this morning.
According to him, intending pilgrims from the Maiduguri/Yola zone would pay the sum of N7, 579,020.96, while those from other Northern zone are paying the sum of N7,696,769.76.
He added that intending pilgrims from the Southern zone will pay N7,991,141.76 as their fare.
Usman further said that the new deadline for payment of the revised fare was Friday, December 5.
