The Federal Government and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have debunked widespread rumours claiming the cancellation of the 2025 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) and the nullification of results.
In separate statements, both the Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC urged Nigerians to disregard the false information currently circulating on social media.
Speaking with Vanguard, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry, Folasade Boriowo, dismissed the reports as entirely false.
“The SSSCE conducted recently by WAEC is not cancelled, as is being falsely spread online. It’s fake news and should be ignored. The Ministry is preparing an official statement to clarify the situation,” she said.
Boriowo further stressed that the government has not taken any decision to cancel the exams or invalidate any results.
Similarly, WAEC, through its Public Relations Officer, Moyosola Adesina, issued an official statement denying the claims.
According to WAEC, the fake statement being circulated is the work of mischief-makers attempting to cause confusion and panic among students and stakeholders.
“The attention of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has been drawn to a press statement alleging the cancellation of all the papers written during the just concluded WASSCE for School Candidates, 2025.
“The press statement, dated Saturday, July 19, 2025, and circulated on social media platforms, claimed that the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with WAEC had cancelled the examination due to widespread malpractice, question paper leakages, and digital dissemination of exam materials.
“The WAEC Management would like to state unequivocally that the spurious press statement being circulated did not emanate from the Council. The said examination has not been cancelled. Though the source of the information cannot be verified, the Council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing WAEC into disrepute and inciting panic.
“As a matter of fact, the marking of scripts for the said examination has just been concluded, and results will be released on or before Thursday, August 4, 2025.”
WAEC also reminded the public that all official information is disseminated through its verified social media handles and accredited media outlets.
“All press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department of the Council on behalf of the Head of National Office. We urge our stakeholders and the general public to disregard the said publication,” the statement read.
The viral fake report had falsely claimed that the Ministry of Education and WAEC jointly cancelled the examination over alleged widespread malpractice, including question paper leakages and AI-assisted cheating.
It also falsely quoted a non-existent “Dr. (Mrs.) Aisha Lawal,” said to be Director-General of the Federal Examinations Regulatory Board.
WAEC has advised the public to ignore the report and stay calm, assuring candidates that their results remain intact and will be released as soon.
