What began as a simple wish by Rev. Tony Akinyemi on his 49th birthday, to give back and ensure no brilliant child is denied an education, has grown into a movement of impact and nation-building. Fifteen years later, the Reverend Tony Akinyemi Scholarship Foundation (rTSF) has become a lifeline for many, supporting over 400 students since inception and continuing to expand its reach.
This year, the scale of need was undeniable. Over 9,000 students from across Nigeria applied for the rTSF scholarship, a figure far higher than in previous years and a stark reminder of the struggles many families face in keeping their children in school. Rising to meet the challenge, the foundation exceeded its annual quota of 24 students and awarded 55 new scholarships at its 2025 Award Ceremony in Lagos, bringing the total number of students currently on its programme to 140.
The ceremony itself was warm and inspiring. Current beneficiaries shared how the scholarship had lifted a burden from their families and allowed them to focus fully on their studies. Alumni also spoke passionately about the ripple effect of rTSF’s support, many are now thriving as teachers, engineers, health professionals, and entrepreneurs, and several have pledged to mentor younger scholars coming after them.
In his address, Engineer Kehinde Osikoya, Chairman of the rTSF Board of Directors, traced the foundation’s vision back to its founder. He recalled how Rev. Tony Akinyemi, Senior Pastor of The Shepherd’s Flock International Church, had drawn from his own experience as a brilliant but indigent student to create a channel of hope for others. “What started from very little beginnings has today become a source of pride and joy,” Engineer Osikoya said, noting that the Foundation’s mission goes beyond paying tuition to raising well-rounded leaders equipped for life and nation-building.
As the event drew to a close, board members were recognised, new honorary members were inducted, and fresh commitments were made to deepen rTSF’s impact. Plans were unveiled to strengthen mentorship and life-skills programmes, and engage more alumni in sustaining the work.
Fifteen years on, rTSF continues to stand as a testament that one man’s vision can spark a movement. With every student supported, it is not only dreams that are restored but also the future of the nation being steadily rebuilt, one scholar at a time.
