
No fewer than 13 passengers have been comfimed dead while 26 others were rescued in a boat accident which occurred at Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
Recall that INFORMATION NIGERIA had reported that the the ferry, conveying 39 traders from market back to Zumba village capsized near Guni town on Saturday.
It was learnt that the mishap was caused by water turbulence and possible overloading.
Speaking over the unfortunate incident on Sunday while addressing newsmen, Director General of Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Baba Arah, disclosed that the victims have been buried.
The agency noted that 39 passengers were in the boat at the time of the incident, and 26 passengers were rescued.
Abdullai said: “39 passengers were in the boat when it capsized. 26 of them were rescued.
“13 passengers died, including eight women, three men and two children.”
Also speaking over the incident on Sunday in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago extended his condolences to the people of Shiroro local government.

Governor Bago described the boat mishap as unfortunate, disheartening, and worrisome.
The statement partly reads: “He expresses concern over the recurring capsizing of boats in the riverine communities of Niger State, despite the numerous efforts put in by relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies MDAs of both federal and state governments, including the N-HYPPADEC, to mitigate the negative trend.
“He says while the government, through the relevant MDAs, is implementing the government’s policies on safe water transportation, farmer Governor Umaru Bago urges those in the riverine communities to endeavour to adhere to all the regulations for their safety.
“He specifically sympathises with the families of the victims and prays that Allah will repose the souls of the deceased, as well as grant quick recovery to those injured.”
