WITH the advancement of digital technology, Dr. Eufemio Rasco, Jr., agriculture lead of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), said agriculture must evolve by embracing artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen efforts toward a resilient and sustainable food system.

Rasco, who attended the 12th National Congress and 2025 Philippine Agriculturists’ Summit on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the SMX Convention Center in Bacolod City, said AI is essential in supporting government policies aimed at transforming the country’s food systems.

“Evolution science tells us that the trait of extinction requires adaptation. All of us must learn new skills, learning with rather that in competition with AI,” he said.

Rasco also cited how business process outsourcing (BPO) companies in Bacolod City utilize AI such as in medical transcription, data analytics, and finance.

The summit, themed “Transformative Agriculture Towards a Resilient and Sustainable Food System,” was organized by the Philippine Association of Agriculturists, Inc. (PAA) and attended by at least 2,000 agriculturists from various local government units and institutions.

Executive Assistant Atty. Carlos Auxtero III, representing Mayor Greg Gasataya, also called for collaborative action to transform agriculture amid climate change, economic disruption, supply chain challenges, and the growing demand for food security.

“Without strong, resilient, and sustainable food systems, we compromise our economy, our health, our security, our culture, and our national identity,” Auxtero said.

Auxtero also recognized the vital role agriculturists in the economy.

“Let this congress serve as a springboard for technical innovation, collaboration across regions, generations and institutions” he said.

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the role of technology in promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

“As we confront the growing threats of climate change, our commitment is to help our farmers become more productive, climate-resilient, and better linked to markets,” he said.

Also present at the summit were Department of Agriculture-Negros Island Region Director Engr. Jose Albert Barrogo, PAA National President Dr. Fernando Sanchez Jr., and members of the PAA Board of Trustees.

The highlight of the event was the oath-taking ceremony of newly registered professional agriculturists and PAA members. (MAP)
