While we all enjoy a snug night in, a day under the duvet and endless films, there are times when we have an excess of energy that simply needs to be expended.
So, where should one go for walk in Dublin as temperatures begin to drop? There are several picturesque routes with plenty of spots to grab a hot drink to keep your hands warm.
We’ve put together a list of some of our favourite walking routes in the capital. So dig out the warm jackets, gloves and wooly hats and enjoy a lovely autumn stroll.
Bull Island
This beautiful stretch of sand on Dublin’s north side offers the chance to wander through extensive dunes and along the sea shore. With Happy Out Cafe conveniently located at the Bull Wall end of the island, you can treat yourself to a coffee and a hot toastie to warm up before or after your walk
Royal Canal
Running from the city centre through Drumcondra, Phibsborough, Ashtown and beyond, Dublin’s Royal Canal provides a lovely scenic walk regardless of your starting point. We suggest beginning in Drumcondra and heading towards Phibsborough, where you’ll find a variety of coffee shops, restaurants and pubs to pop into if you fancy it.
Dodder Walk
The River Dodder diverges from the Liffey near Grand Canal and extends to Ballsbridge and onto Rathfarnham. The riverbanks offer scenic views of Dublin’s charming south side. A notable stop is Bushy Park where, on weekends, you might stumble upon a market offering delicious food and drinks.
Portmarnock to Malahide
Starting at the Velvet Strand in Portmarnock, a dedicated coastal pathway leads towards Malahide, offering one of Dublin’s finest winter walks. Once you reach the village, a variety of cafes and restaurants are ready to welcome you for a coffee, meal or even a pint.
Grand Canal
Could this be the city’s most picturesque walk? While the Grand Canal is bustling with people enjoying a ‘canal can’ during the summer, it transforms into a charming spot for an evening stroll in the winter. During the day, popular spots like Grove Road Cafe, South Bank and Noshington Cafe are on hand to serve up a hot cuppa.
St Anne’s Park
St Anne’s Park in Clontarf boasts a myriad of walking trails that meander through woodlands and open green spaces, some offering stunning views of the coast. If you’re in the mood for lunch and a coffee, Olive’s Room in The Red Stables is a great choice.
Phoenix Park
The iconic Phoenix Park offers a plethora of walking routes around Europe’s largest urban park, where you might spot deer and perhaps even the country’s president. When you’re ready for a hot drink, Nakuru Coffee House, Phoenix Park Tea Rooms, Dash Container Coffee and Phoenix Cafe are all excellent options.
Howth Pier
Whether you’re up for a leisurely stroll down the promenade onto the pier or fancy tackling the cliff walk, Howth is a delightful destination this winter. With establishments like Doghouse Blues and Tea Rooms, Starbucks, Bodega Coffee, The Grind and many more ready to serve you excellent coffee and other hot beverages.
Great South Wall
Venturing out to Poolbeg Lighthouse on the Great South Wall walk offers stunning views of the city behind, arguably the most unique viewpoint available.
East Pier, Dun Laoghaire
A pleasant little stroll along Dun Laoghaire’s East Pier is a must when visiting the area. Pass by the beautiful Victorian bandstand and yachts bobbing in the water as you observe the bustling town behind. For a warming treat, pop into Shoe Lane Coffee, The Art of Coffee, Gourmet Food Parlour or any of the other fantastic cafes in the vicinity.
Killiney Hill
Regardless of whether it’s the height of summer or the depths of winter, the views from Killiney Hill are unparalleled. Overlooking both Killiney and Dalkey, it’s a must-visit for any Dublin walking enthusiast. To warm up afterwards, head to Tower Tea Rooms.
Swords Estuary
Swords Estuary is perhaps one of Dublin’s most underappreciated winter walks. Starting at Malahide Marina, continue past Seabury to the Motorway Bridge. Once there, make your way to Swords Village where places like The Cottage, Tartan Larder Café and Coffee Works will welcome you with a hot drink and snack.
