10 Critically-Acclaimed TV Shows You’ve Never Heard

When it comes to television, there’s an almost endless amount of content to make your way through, and now, with streaming platforms churning out new series faster than most of us can finish a season, it’s easy for even the most brilliant shows to slip under the radar. While household names like Squid Game, Bridgerton, Stranger Things, Breaking Bad, Wednesday, and Game of Thrones dominate conversations, there’s a treasure trove of critically acclaimed gems that quietly gathered awards and glowing reviews — yet never broke into mainstream recognition.

Below, we’re looking at the shows that critics raved about but algorithms somehow forgot to recommend. From daring narratives that pushed storytelling boundaries to overlooked masterclasses in acting, here are 10 TV masterpieces you probably missed — but will be glad to discover.

10 ‘The Corner’ (2000)

The Corner chronicles the life of an impoverished family living in the dangerous, drug-riddled streets of West Baltimore. Based on the 1997 nonfiction book The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood by David Simon and Ed Burns, the miniseries ran for just 6 episodes in 2000.

‘The Corner’ Paved the Way for ‘The Wire’

While it didn’t attract huge numbers and may not be as spoken about as shows like The Wire — which it paved the way for — it was a resounding critical success. Scoring a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, it was praised for being raw, gritty, uncompromising, realistic, smartly directed, and supremely well-acted. Its harrowing depiction of life under the thumb of addiction and poverty has been compared to the horrors of Requiem for a Dream and the eye-opening intensity of City of God.

9 ‘Somewhere Boy’ (2022)

This British drama follows a teenager named Danny who has been isolated from the outside world by his father following his mother’s fatal accident. Here, he is led to believe that the world is a terrifying place full of dangerous monsters. After his father mysteriously goes missing, he is forced to venture into the real world, discovering that monsters, in fact, do not exist. Instead, he must learn to navigate the challenges of adapting to a world he barely knows while piecing together the mystery of his father’s disappearance.

A Poignant Tale of Self-Discovery

A poignant exploration of trauma, resilience, and self-discovery, Somewhere Boy scored a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 94%, with actor Lewis Gribben receiving particular praise for his committed performance as Danny. Despite its critical acclaim, the show has had limited global exposure, originally airing on the UK’s Channel 4 and later being quietly introduced to Hulu in 2023.

8 ‘Baskets’ (2016 – 2019)

Baskets follows the life of Chip Baskets, who has dreams of becoming a professional clown, but after failing to get a degree at a prestigious clowning school in Paris, he is stuck with a job as a rodeo clown in his hometown of Bakersfield, California. Co-created by Louis C.K., Zach Galifianakis, and Jonathan Krisel, Zach Galifianakis delivers a tour de force dual performance as both Chip Baskets and his twin brother, Dale.

Baskets’ Unique Brand of Dark and Uncomfortable Humor Is Not for Everyone

Full of deadpan delivery, unpleasant characters, and awkward humor, Baskets can make for uncomfortable viewing, but if dark comedy that occasionally leans into absurdism is your cup of tea, Baskets is essential viewing. Critics have praised its originality, strong performances, and unique humor.

7 ‘Sorry for Your Loss’ (2018 – 2019)

Elizabeth Olsen delivers one of her all-time greatest performances in the little-known Sorry for Your Loss, playing the writer and recently widowed Leigh Shaw. Following her husband’s death, she quits her writing job and moves in with her mother and sister, where she is forced to reassess her life and relationships.

One of Elizabeth Olsen’s Finest Performances

Combining heart and wit with gut-wrenching emotion, Sorry for Your Loss is a grounded and insightful exploration of grief and loss that won the hearts of critics but failed to reach the audience it deserved, as its exclusivity with Facebook Watch drastically limited its exposure.

6 ‘The Street’ (2006 – 2009)

Set in an unassuming working-class (blue-collar) area of Manchester, UK, every house on The Street holds its own unique story. Presented in an anthology format, each episode focuses on a different household, exploring the lives, struggles, and moral dilemmas of its residents.

The Street Features Some of Britain’s Finest Acting Talent

Three seasons, four International Emmy Awards, and high praise across the board from critics, The Street stars some of the United Kingdom’s finest talent, including Timothy Spall, Jim Broadbent, Bob Hoskins, and Matt Smith. It’s hard-hitting, heartfelt, layered, and raw, and perhaps — had it premiered today on Netflix as opposed to 20 years ago on the BBC — it would be a global sensation.

5 ‘The Singing Detective’ (1986)

The Singing Detective remains one of television’s most daring and influential dramas. Following Philip Marlow, a mystery writer confined to a hospital bed by severe arthritis, the series blurs reality, memory, and fantasy, using 1940s musical numbers to reveal Marlow’s inner life. Michael Gambon’s portrayal of Marlow, bringing both humor and heartbreak, sits among the greatest in the late legend’s vast body of work.

A Wildly Imaginative and Creative Piece of Art

Combining noir, dark comedy, and profound psychological insight, it received universal critical acclaim yet is barely spoken about today and received little audience recognition outside of the UK.

While maybe not as commercially successful as many of the shows it inspired — by challenging TV conventions with its fragmented narrative, genre-bending style, and complex storytelling — it was early proof that television could be just as artistically ambitious as film or literature.

4 ‘Slings and Arrows’ (2003 – 2006)

Slings and Arrows is a Canadian show set at the fictional New Burbage Shakespearean Festival. Consisting of three seasons, each one focuses on the trials and tribulations of the festival’s cast and crew as they work on a different play. In a clever twist, the real-world problems involving the team’s personal and professional conflicts often mirror those found in the play they’re working on.

‘Slings and Arrows’ Was Showered with Awards

In its three seasons, Slings and Arrows was nominated for 50 awards across several categories and won 22 awards for acting, writing, direction, editing, and more. It is considered one of the finest examples of Canadian TV and received universal acclaim for its darkly comedic tone, strong acting, and clever writing. Despite this, the show is little known outside of Canada and remains a hidden gem of meta excellence.

3 ‘Rectify’ (2013 – 2016)

Rectify is a powerful TV program that follows a man as he tries to rebuild his life after he is released from prison following nearly 20 years on death row for a wrongful conviction. Spanning four seasons, audiences bear witness to his struggles as he tries to reconnect with a community divided over his guilt or innocence, face the psychological toll of his incarceration, and navigate a modern world that feels alien.

A Slow-Burning, Character-Driven Drama

Set in Georgia, this Southern Gothic drama was praised by critics for its deep characters and plotlines. With each season improving on the last, it finished in 2016 with a terrific, soulful finale, filled with perfectly realized moments and the sense of life moving ever forward. Unfortunately, but unsurprisingly, the show’s slow-burn drama and character-driven narrative failed to resonate with mainstream audiences to the same extent as other big hitters.

2 ‘The Bureau’ (2015 – 2020)

One of the greatest French television shows ever made, The Bureau revolves around the lives of agents of the DGSE (General Directorate of External Security), France’s principal external security service. Think Homeland or The Americans but with a greater sense of realism, subtlety, and more character-driven storytelling. The show received widespread critical acclaim, with The New York Times describing it as “moody, cynical & stylish … consistently smart and understated.”

The Director Has Distanced Himself from the American Remake

Restricted by its French language and limited international viewing options, The Bureau hasn’t quite received the global recognition it deserves. An English-language adaptation, The Agency, starring Michael Fassbender, was released in 2025 to mixed reviews, but the original director of The Bureau has publicly distanced himself from the project, claiming to have had no involvement.

1 ‘Mr. Inbetween’ (2018 – 2021)

A serialization of the Australian cult-favorite movie The Magician, Mr. Inbetween is a pitch-black comedy that follows the day-to-day life of a hitman-for-hire as he tries to balance his criminal activities with his mundane life and obligations to friends and family.

A “Hit” With Critics

The show’s balance between dread and deadpan laughs was a hit with critics, who universally praised its acting, tone, and direction, noting its consistent improvement from season to season. Its combination of sharp dialogue, taut drama, and moments of tenderness landed it on many ‘best of TV’ lists, and while it managed to establish a strong cult following, it remains relatively unknown among the general public.
